DJI Government Edition: a high-security drone-based solution for government programs

DJI Government Edition

DJI Government Edition has strict data controls that give federal agencies full control over their data when they fly with DJI drones.

DJI, the world leader in civil drones and aerial imaging technology, introduces DJI Government Edition: a new complete drone-based solution designed specifically for use in high-security situations by government agencies around the world. Customers have always had full control over how drone-generated data is collected, stored and transmitted. The unique architecture of Government Edition ensures that drone-generated data, including photos and videos captured during flight, never leaves the drones and can therefore never be shared with unauthorized parties, including DJI. This architecture ensures that Government Edition meets the government industry’s stringent requirements for data management, risk mitigation, and control of enterprise-wide data sharing.

Government Edition enables government agencies around the world to benefit from DJI’s civil drones technology for use cases such as agricultural analysis and infrastructure inspections through to land management and disaster response. DJI has developed the solution to meet the needs of the U.S. Department of the Internal Office of Aviation Services, which in 2018 alone operated more than 10,000 drones flights. The DJI Government Edition Mavic Pro and Matrice 600 Pro drones have been used in over 1,500 of these missions; their safety has been validated through multiple audits performed by DJI’s external and internal partners*.

The Government Edition solution is based on the industry-leading DJI drone hardware and is controlled by custom device firmware and operating software in a unique architecture that supports the highest data security requirements:

1. No data transmission – A permanently enabled local data mode within the DJI Pilot custom application prevents data from being transferred from the mobile application over the Internet to third parties or DJI.
2. Firmware Upgrade Reviews – The aviation and IT departments of government agencies can review firmware updates in electronic isolation before applying them to their fleets; they have complete control over how to validate them and when to install them on DJI drones.
3. Limited Hardware Pairing – Drones and remote controls running the Government Edition solution firmware can be connected together and are not compatible with other DJI products. This prevents the use of unsafe hardware and unauthorized third-party applications.

“Government Edition allows us to tell our customers that all of their telemetry data – where their drone is flying – is securely stored and not shared with anyone but them,” said Brandon Torres Declet, CEO and co-founder of Measure. “Having Government Edition will allow us more control over that process, and avoiding automatic firmware updates that may have a potential impact on our operating program is important for us and government clients.”
