DJI O4 Ground Station: The Wide-Area Transmission System for 24/7 Drone Operations

Discover how DJI O4 Ground Station combines a 12-antenna array, automatic multi-band selection, and two operating modes to extend DJI Dock 3 coverage into wide-area scenarios, even in complex environments.

In large-scale drone programs, link continuity is one of the key factors that determines the real autonomy of the operation. When the signal drops, it is not only the flight that stops: the entire inspection, monitoring, or remote intervention workflow is interrupted.

DJI O4 Ground Station is designed to strengthen this part of the infrastructure. It integrates a high-performance RF unit, a high-gain omnidirectional antenna system, and automatic band selection in a device built to operate outdoors, without constant supervision and with reduced maintenance.

When paired with DJI Dock 3, the station can operate in Gateway Mode, with direct connection to FlightHub 2 via Ethernet or cellular network, or in Relay Mode, useful in areas without stable coverage or with significant physical obstacles. With DJI Matrice 400, under compatible conditions and regulations, transmission can reach up to 40 km; in standby mode, the declared consumption of the station alone is 7 W.

Advanced Hardware, Robust Transmission

High-Performance RF Unit

Link quality starts with the radio hardware. The RF unit of DJI O4 Ground Station is designed to increase power, coverage, and signal penetration in contexts where buildings, infrastructure, and interference can weaken communication.

The optimized signal-to-noise ratio supports reception even in crowded electromagnetic environments, helping maintain a more stable video stream and reducing the risk of losing the operational link.

High-Gain Omnidirectional Array

The system uses 12 internal and external antennas with horizontal and vertical polarization. Omnidirectional coverage allows the station to maintain contact with the drone from multiple directions, without requiring continuous manual orientation.

Automatic Multi-Band Selection

In urban environments, the radio spectrum can change quickly. DJI O4 Ground Station can automatically switch between sub-2G, 2.4 GHz, 5.2 GHz, 5.8 GHz, and other supported bands, helping avoid congestion and interference without operator intervention.

The result is smoother video transmission during critical missions. With DJI Matrice 400, in open areas and in countries where the configuration is permitted, the declared maximum range reaches up to 40 km.

5-System, 19-Frequency GNSS

The integrated RTK module tracks 19 frequencies across five global satellite systems. This helps the station quickly acquire signal and maintain precise positioning even in partially obstructed scenarios, dense urban areas, vegetation-covered environments, or complex terrain.

Gateway Mode: Wide Coverage and Direct Network Connection

Direct Connection to FlightHub 2

In Gateway Mode, DJI O4 Ground Station connects to DJI FlightHub 2 via Ethernet or through DJI Cellular Dongle 2, sold separately. The station becomes a remote transmission point for low-latency video and operational control.

With DJI Dock 3, this configuration allows coverage to be extended up to 30 km from the station under compatible conditions. Integration is supported with FlightHub 2 Public Cloud, FlightHub 2 On-Premises, FlightHub 2 AIO, and third-party systems based on Cloud API or FlightHub Sync.

Signal Map for Better Placement Planning

After the flight, FlightHub 2 can generate a signal map based on the data collected during the mission. Weak areas become visible, allowing the operator to decide where to install or reposition the station to strengthen coverage before future missions.

Virtual Cockpit for Agile Remote Control

Also in Gateway Mode, Virtual Cockpit enables manual remote control of the drone within the area covered by the station. The operator can intervene on preset routes and quickly respond to multi-point requirements without being physically present on site.

Relay Mode: Extending the Link Beyond the Network

Elevated Installation to Overcome Obstacles

Relay Mode is designed for areas outside coverage, valleys, obstructed corridors, or urban environments where the network is not sufficient. By installing the station at an elevated point, the drone’s video link can overcome obstacles that would limit conventional transmission.

This mode is compatible with DJI Dock 3, Matrice 400, Matrice 4E, Matrice 4T, Matrice 4D/4TD with DJI RC Plus 2 Enterprise, and DJI FlyCart 100, in compliance with local regulations and the availability of the required radio bands.

Multi-Device Rotation to Maximize Hardware Use

Remote controllers and docks within the coverage area can detect and connect to the station. A single DJI O4 Ground Station can therefore serve multiple aircraft in sequence, improving infrastructure utilization across distributed fleets.

Rugged Design, Intelligent Power Management

All-Weather Reliability

The IP67 rating protects against dust and water ingress under the conditions defined by the specifications. The declared operating temperature range is from -40 °C to 55 °C, making the station suitable for outdoor installations, coastal sites, mountain areas, and industrial environments with severe weather conditions.

Lightning and Surge Protection

The design includes dedicated protection and grounding compliant with EN/IEC 61643-21 Category C. In exposed installations, such as towers or elevated points, proper grounding remains essential to reduce risks related to surges.

Maintenance-Free Design

Fanless passive cooling eliminates moving components subject to wear. The self-recovery function helps the station return to operation after power interruptions or software anomalies, reducing technical field visits.

Intelligent Low-Power Mode

In Gateway Mode, when no drones are connected, the station enters hibernation and consumes 7 W in standby. For off-grid installations, it can be connected to DJI Power solar solutions or third-party photovoltaic systems, sold separately.

Open Ecosystem, Flexible Integration

Unified Visual Management

DJI O4 Ground Station can integrate up to four standard IP cameras via ONVIF and GB/T 28181 protocols, transmitting live video directly into FlightHub 2. Alerts generated by the cameras, such as movement detection, can be synchronized and managed within the same interface.

Remote PTZ support also allows operators to control pan, tilt, and zoom on connected cameras, providing a centralized view of the operational area.

Open ESDK for Custom Integrations

With ESDK 2.0 based on MQTT and Cloud API, developers and system integrators can connect the station to vertical platforms, third-party Remote ID receivers, or ADS-B receivers. This allows the operation to be enriched with real-time awareness of surrounding air traffic.

Getting Started with DJI O4 Ground Station

DJI O4 Ground Station represents an important step for organizations looking to manage automated, wide-area drone operations without continuous on-site supervision. The combination of a 12-antenna array, multi-band selection, Gateway Mode, and Relay Mode helps overcome one of the most common limitations of drone infrastructures: link continuity.

For users operating DJI Dock 3, Gateway Mode enables direct connection to FlightHub 2 and remote control within the covered area. For missions in valleys, areas with obstacles, or zones not reached by the network, Relay Mode extends the link further. For remote installations, low power consumption and compatibility with solar power make long-term operation more practical.

Whether for infrastructure inspections, remote site monitoring, industrial security, or large-scale logistics, DJI O4 Ground Station is designed to keep the fleet reliably, continuously, and remotely connected.
