DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro Challenges GoPro with Next-Level Image Quality

DJI’s latest release, the DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro, makes a bold statement, betting that action camera users are seeking professional-level results. With promises of “revolutionary image quality,” DJI is focusing on enhancing both dynamic range and low-light performance.

Last year, the DJI Osmo Action 4 (without the ‘Pro’ designation) was impressive enough for us to name it the best action camera, dethroning GoPro—a brand that essentially pioneered the category.

Recently, GoPro regained some attention with the launch of the Hero 13, featuring a redesigned exterior. The new model introduced a switchable lens mount, which enables the camera to recognize the attached lens, bringing a more traditional camera feel to the action camera world.

They also reinstated GPS functionality in the camera body. However, GoPro did not upgrade the small image sensor from the Hero 11 and 12 models.

DJI, while keeping the sensor size unchanged (already leading in this area), now calls it a “next-generation” sensor. It boasts a 2.4 μm pixel size and an impressive 13.5 stops of dynamic range.

In addition to the sensor, DJI has worked on extending battery life. The new model includes a larger battery and a more efficient processor, allowing for up to 4 hours of recording time.

One standout feature of the Osmo Action 5 Pro is its industry-first subject tracking capability, which is likely to appeal to those who enjoy creating vertical format content while on the move.

Paul Pan, DJI’s Senior Product Line Manager, shared, “Creators have evolved, becoming more sophisticated in the stories they tell and the moments they capture.

Instead of making incremental improvements, we strive to push the entire action camera category forward and evolve with these creators.”
